History of the Program


The program was the result of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). When the financial crisis hit nationally in the fall of 2008, the government constructed an emergency funding plan to address the hardest hit aspects of our lives: jobs. The result was the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It also included other aspects such as long-term investments and checks and balances for accountability of the government.


An obvious place where funding could make a big impact was in rural America where there was a lack of access to high-speed internet for online job searches, computer skills training, business growth, and other uses. The government set aside several billion dollars in support that was dedicated funding for rural residents to get high-speed internet access. Exede (formerly WildBlue) was chosen to participate as a respected satellite internet company. The funds have been used and the program is now expired.


Prior to the expiration of the funds, Exede by Viasat (formerly WildBlue) had been selected to be a provider under the ARRA internet program because we are well respected for our advanced technology, our professional and competent customer service, our installation that is hassle-free. We were honored to be chosen for this program and glad to be able to help people get faster internet service.


The government created a database of households eligible for this service based on location and not already having high-speed internet access. They set all the eligibility rules, not Exede.
